Yesterday Sigmund Morrell ran his last race for Alpha Plus with a very respectable 6th place finish in the Climbs of Pinchor the scene of his very first win way back in season 5.
Morrell joined Alpha Plus in the middle of season 12. "We were a new team with young riders. At that time we didn't know what it took to win or how to structure a competitive team, Sigmund brought that knowledge and turned us into a top tier team." said David the team manager of Alpha Plus.
When Morrell joined Alpha Plus it was quickly apparent that it was a great fit for everyone. "Alpha Plus was new on the scene," said Morell "They had great, but young and inexperienced riders. With my many seasons of racing I had the knowledge and had won a few races but had never been placed in a position of leadership. When David came to me and said that he wanted me to be the team leader it was an opportunity I could not resist."
This relationship worked well right from the beginning with Morrell winning a couple races right away. More importantly, though, he taught the team what it takes to win and Dwayne Reiswig was able to win his first race before the end of season 12 as well.
"Before Sigmund came we had a lot of excitement and energy but we did not know how to focus it to be competitive." said Reiswig.
From that point the meteoric rise of Alpha Plus began. By the end of Season 12 Alpha Plus had moved from division 7 all the way up to division 3. Alpha Plus also claimed a spot as one of the top 10 Top Movers, a position the team has held for over a season and a half and still maintains.
Through season 13 the team moved strongly into division 2 and now sits on the cusp of moving into division 1.
On a personal level of accomplishment Morrell has taken over the top spot as the #1 rider in the United States. "What a better way to go out if this is it for me, but on top." said Morrell.
"Sigmund came at a time when we really needed him," said David "and then when the time was right he again did exactly what the team needed by stepping aside and letting us move forward with developing our younger riders into team leaders."
"I will never forget what Alpha Plus did for me. They made these last few seasons by far and away the best of my career." said Morrell. "They would have let me stay as long as I wanted but I just felt that it was time to let some of the younger riders have a shot at leadership and as long as I was here that couldn't happen."
"We wish Sigmund the best in whatever he does next, whether that is enjoying retirement or ridding for another team." said David "He will always be special to this team."
